The Barn is located on the main street of Middleton by Wirksworth. It is known as a ‘working’ village, with a great history of limestone mining.
Located just a few miles south of Matlock, in the south eastern tip of the Peak District, you will not be disappointed with the stunning array of things to do within a ten mile radius of The Barn Holiday Cottage:
The Barn is perfectly located for cyclists and walkers alike, with the Tissington and High Peak Trails right on our doorstep. Cycle hire facilities are available just around the corner at Middleton Top. You can also aim to finish plenty of walking routes at the newly refurbished Rising Sun Inn, a short walk from The Barn, where you will find great food and drink at a reasonable price.
The pleasant, hillside, old-market town of Wirksworth (1 mile away) has all the main facilities, a variety of lovely little shops and cafes and hosts a brilliant Arts Festival every year.
Local attractions include: the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site where you can follow in the footsteps of Sir Richard Arkwright at Cromford Mill. Matlock Bath with the famous Heights of Abraham cable car, Aquarium and Gulliver's' Kingdom theme park to name but a few. Heage Windmill, a working mill which makes a great visit. Ecclesbourne Valley Railway and Peak Rail both run regular steam locomotive excursions.
Also nearby is the historic market town of Ashbourne , known as 'The Gateway to The Peaks', which has lots of quaint shops and restaurants.
All within easy driving distance, The Peak District National Park has so much to offer with the likes of Dovedale and Goyt Valley. You will also be amazed by the fantastic historic houses in the area; you can pretend you are Elizabeth Bennet or Mr Darcy at Chatsworth House or swan around Haddon Hall as though it were your second home in the country (as I like to do!). You can also enjoy the area's picturesque towns and villages like Buxton and Bakewell and the many other visitor attractions such as the Crich tramway museum and Carsington reservoir (just up the road and perfect for a sunny picnic). Slightly further afield you will find Hope Valley with the Castleton Caverns and Derwent Dams.
